A Brief Introduction to Margaret Laurence Essay Jean Margaret Wemyss was born in Neepawa, Manitoba on July 18, 1926 to Robert Harrison Wemyss, a lawyer, and his wife Verna Simpson. Her mother died when she was 4 years old, and her father later married his former sister in law Margaret Campbell Simpson. When Laurence was nine years old her father died of pneumonia and she moved in with her Grandfather. Laurence wrote for and was an editor of the Black and Gold, the Neepawa Collegiate paper. When she was in Grades Eleven and Twelve, she had several articles published in the Neepawa Press. After graduating form high school in 1944, Margaret attended Winnipegs United College, and was assistant editor of the college paper. Jean Margaret Wemyss graduated from United College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1947, and married John Fergus Laurence on September 13, 1947, in the Neepawa United Church. She then worked as a reporter for the Winnipeg Citizen. In 1949, she and her husband moved to England and one year later they left England for Africa where they remained for seven years. Their daughter Jocelyn was born in 1952 in England and their son David was born in the Gold Coast in 1955. In 1957 they returned to Canada where they lived in Vancouver for five years. In 1962, she separated from her husband and moved to England where she lived in London for a year. She then moved to Elm Cottage near Penn in Buckinghamshire and remained there for more than a decade, with frequent visits to Canada. Margaret Laurence received honorary degrees from more than a dozen Canadian universities. She was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1971, and had numerous other honors given to her including two Governor Generals Awards. She served as Writer in Residence at the Universities of Toronto and Western Ontario and Trent University, and was appointed Chancellor of Trent for the years 1981 to 1983. Her early work revolved around her African experience. Her first publication, A Tree for Poverty, was a collection of her translations of Somali legends and poetry. This Side Jordan, The Tomorrow-Tamer and The Prophets Camel Bell followed this in 1960. The Stone Angel was her first work of fiction set in Canada was published in 1964. It was the first book of the Manawaka series, which includes A Jest of God, The Fire-Dwellers, A Bird in the House, and The Diviners. She also wrote several childrens books including Jasons Quest, Six Darn Cows, The Olden Days Coat and A Christmas Birthday Story. Margaret Laurence died of Cancer on January 5, 1987, and, at her request, her children, Jocelyn and David, brought her ashes to be interred in Riverside Cemetery, Neepawa.

Many of the performances run into another with scarcely a break or a word in between, but some of them are preceded by stories and laughter, and those are some of the best performances on the album. â€Å"River† is one of them; Isaac tells us about writing it for their first independent album when he was barely twelve years old, Taylor barely nine, and Zac just six years old; and when they follow by performing it, you’d never know they hadn’t played the song in over ten years. â€Å"With You In Your Dreams† is another one; Taylor correctly deduces that the audience would know this one (it’s from their breakout 1997 album Middle of Nowhere) and asks them to finish a line. He sings â€Å"And though my flesh is gone†¦Ã¢â‚¬  and is ruefully amused when the audience screams like a bunch of hormonal girls instead of singing the answering harmony. Isaac adds, â€Å"You can do better than that. It’s simple, it requires no real articulation†, and Zac doesn’t bother doing anything but laugh at them. Each brother also takes the time to play one of their own compositions solo. (While Hanson cred its all their writing to themselves as a band, usually each song was written chiefly by one brother.) Isaac introduces a song from 2000’s This Time Around by experimentally strumming a chord. When the audience obviously recognizes it as â€Å"Hand in Hand†, he seems cheered, and explains (perhaps a little too happily) that he wrote it about an old girlfriend that cheated on him, â€Å"but it’s okay: I got her back!† The look on his face when the audience reacts is almost more priceless than the song itself, but he follows up with a great bare-bones rendition. Zac’s three minutes are a little disappointing after this, as he picks out â€Å"The Walk† on a piano he’s obviously unfamiliar with as a sole percussionist, his vocals are distracted and a few times he slows or speeds the rhythm without seeming to notice; it might be the only disappointing track on the live album. Taylor soon makes up for it; the piano playing on â€Å"Crazy Be autiful† is almost exquisite in its simplicity and sounds better than it ever will on the studio album; without the distraction of production effects or background vocals, we’re captured by its quick and flighty melody and seduced by Taylor’s anguished vocals. After spending two hours with them on Underneath Acoustic Live, it’s hard to believe that these men are the same little blonde boys that first rocked the world and then drove it crazy when the radio just wouldn’t quit playing â€Å"MMMBop†. They’ve grown into talented musicians who know how to take a hook and turn it into something beautiful, and they can strip down a performance to its most naked elements and keep it worth listening to. America's first war was the war for independence from Great Britain was a major achievement. This accomplishment could not have been done if it was not for the African American soldiers in the armies. The first American to actually shed blood during the revolution that freed America from being under British rule was Crispus Attucks, a Black seaman. Attucks and four white men were killed in the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770. Attucks was still willing to fight against England along with other whites, althoug he was a fugitive slave running from his master. The colonists probably would have kept African Americans out of the military during the war if it was not for the proclamation by the Lord of Dunmore. He said "I do hereby... declare all... Negroes... free, that are able and willing to bear arms, they joining his Majesty's troops, as soon as may be, for the more speedily reducing this colony to a proper dignity."
